Time for another WMC – RITMICO MIAMI 2013 – I just finished the work on the compilation of 14 remastered Global Ritmico tracks plus 1 unreleased track! The picture used in this cover was actually taken by myself in Miami Beach 2010. Unfortunately I won’t be there this year when David Phillips will play some of the contained tracks in the WMC convention center! You can find the tracklist and more info over here.

I never get bored of listening to uplifters and downlifters in various styles of modern music, but the problem is: I always struggle to find the right one for the song I’m working on. So is there a solution: YES – make your own!

When it comes to the basic principle of making uplifters you’ll need a noise generator and some kind of lowpass filter. If you want them to sound fat – add some reverb and compress it, voila – fat nice noise and you can control it all by yourself.

My weapon of choice is in this case is the good, old Subtractor in Reason. Just turn on the noise generator and play with filter and release, like so:

Well, I think you get the idea.

While playing around with drum sounds I’ve created this beat and constructed the other sounds around it. I’ve had much fun playing around with the sounds and think they fit nice together – and that’s why I wanted to share it – so tell me what you think about the track.

Just finished the work on Global Ritmicos 40th release and for sure the cover for it! The cover itself is quite a simple one, with a beautiful picture of Johannesburg based Aldon Scott Mc Leod. I liked this picture a lot and in my opinion it illustrates Davids work for this series very well. As usual you can read more about the release right over here. Hope you like it!

Xone:K2 – Traktor Pro Mapping

The piece of hardware I bought this year and haven’t been able to configure yet was the Allen & Heath Xone:K2. I liked this controller because it is compact, has everything for a simple setup, sounds great – short: worth the money, a quality product. It even comes with a soft case, which is quite practical.

So, now I had finally the time to configure it the way I wanted. It is my first real mapping what I’m doing with it, and well for me it’s kind of a big thing, that you are able to decide what you want the controller to do – that’s why I put some thought in my mapping for Native Instruments Traktor Pro.

What do I want?

To control two decks, especially the loop function and maybe some FX
To control the loading process of files I want to play
To be able to monitor the two decks and the final output
To control the internal mixer, channel volume, EQ and Filter
To cut the functionality down to a minimum, but it has to work

What do I not want?

To think a lot while using the controller
An overloaded setup

Is it possible with this controller: YES!

But unfortunately I need to stick with Traktor 2.5 for the moment. Because in version 2.6, Native Instruments has made one change that is not compatible with my ideas yet. I want to press one button to activate a loop and when I turn it to control the loop length. They have changed the “Loop Set” which works together with “Loop Active” from a “toggle” to a “hold” button – which makes it for me so far impossible to get it to work as I want – and nobody (I’ve already searched for it) had so far a clever idea to solve my problem. I haven’t found one either, so I stick with Traktor 2.5 in the meantime.

Dive deep into the details of this very powerful Drum & Bass mix. I was just playing around with some nice tracks on two decks, without any concept, no fancy FX, just a delay, reverb and the mixer controls – then I was trying a few things out and this came out in one run. Since I enjoyed it already very much while mixing – and still do after rehearing it – I thought it is worth sharing. Tell me what you think about it.

I just finished the work on the Global Ritmico 039 Cover. Since the series name is called “Fine Slices” – more related to the musical meaning of slicing – I thought that I can go straight forward and use toast-slices as a cover. Since the sound of the release is backed quite good together I think it will fit with the cover and the fun about this whole thing. Hope you enjoy the sound and the cover.
